Just turn up

In 2007 the cottage was badly in need of an upgrade.   It had not been decorated for 30 years, was poorly heated and suffered from mould and damp. The heating consisted of old open fires and electric storage heating. Hot water was via an electric immersion heater.  The cottage also needed rewiring and its key features and characters (inglenook, cob walls) had been covered by modern methods such as cement render, plaster board, gypsum plaster, and unbreathable paints  and finishes. The concrete floors were damp and in direct contact with the earth. The first floor ceilings were un-insulated. The building was very draughty and leaky with single glazed windows and suffered condensation.

Over a five year period the cottage was restored: the house was rewired, the walls rendered internally and externally with natural materials, the ground floor dug up and insulated, the windows replaced, the roof space insulated and air tightness was improved. A  woodburner was installed for space and hot water heating.
