The Sports and Community Hall at Woolfardisworthy (known locally as Woolsery) was designed by Gale and Snowden Architects and completed in 2001.  It has been recognised as one of the best examples in the country of rural, community-initiated, sustainable public buildings.  Woolsery Village Hall won the 2003 Civic Trust Awards special award in the Vital Villages section was was nominated in the sustainability section.  The energy and water consumption has been monitored since completion and uses 25% of the energy and water that would be consumed by a similar 'good' energy efficient building constructed at the same time.

The building includes the following technologies and design features:

  • Solar PV
  • Ground Source Heat Pump
  • Wind Turbine
  • Maximization of natural daylight and passive solar gain
  • Super-insulation and Triple Glazing
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Passive ventillation system
  • Integrated permaculture external landscape
